Argentina uses the Argentine peso (ARS). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in cities and tourist areas, though carrying some cash is advisable for markets, smaller restaurants and rural destinations.

Most visitors to Argentina have a safe and enjoyable experience. Petty theft such as pickpocketing and bag snatching is the most common concern in busy urban areas, so keeping belongings secure and staying aware of your surroundings is sensible practice.

Within Buenos Aires, the Subte metro, an extensive bus network and metered taxis provide convenient city transport, with a rechargeable SUBE card used to pay for public transit.

Argentina's seasons are the reverse of the northern hemisphere, with summer running from December to February and winter from June to August. Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) offer mild temperatures and fewer crowds in most regions, while Patagonia is best visited between October and March.

Spanish is the official and overwhelmingly dominant language throughout Argentina. English is spoken in many hotels, upscale restaurants and tourist attractions in Buenos Aires, but outside the capital a basic knowledge of Spanish is very helpful.

Hepatitis A vaccination is recommended for most travellers, and yellow fever vaccination is advised for visits to the northern provinces of Corrientes, Misiones, Formosa, Chaco and parts of Jujuy and Salta, including Iguazu Falls. Consulting a travel health clinic or your doctor at least four to six weeks before departure is recommended to ensure your routine immunisations are also up to date.

Tipping is customary in Argentina, with around 10 per cent of the bill being the standard in restaurants. Some establishments add a service charge, so it is worth checking your receipt before leaving an additional tip.
