Pre-travel visa checklist: what to confirm before you fly

Most border problems are not dramatic. They are small, avoidable, and discovered at check in, when there is nothing to be done about them. A passport with too little validity left. An authorisation attached to a passport that has since been replaced. A stay allowance that was already used up earlier in the year.

This checklist covers the things worth confirming before departure, in the order it makes sense to confirm them.

Eight to twelve weeks out

Check the requirement for your nationality. Look up the corridor for your passport and destination, and confirm on the official government source it links to. If you hold two passports, check both. The answer can differ significantly.

Check your passport validity against the destination rule, not the expiry date. Many countries require validity beyond your intended departure, commonly six months. Some calculate from arrival, some from departure. Our guide to passport validity rules sets out how the different rules work.

Count your blank pages. Some countries require one or two entirely blank pages, and endorsement pages do not always count.

Start any visa application now. Appointment availability, rather than processing, usually sets the real timeline. Our guide to how to apply for a visa covers the process end to end.

Check whether you are transiting anywhere. Transit can carry its own requirements, particularly where you change terminal, clear immigration, or collect baggage. This catches people out on connections they think of as incidental.

Four to six weeks out

Apply for any electronic authorisation. Most eTA style approvals arrive quickly, but a minority go to manual review. Applying now removes that risk entirely.

Confirm your insurance meets any minimum requirement. Some countries, including the Schengen states, specify a minimum level of medical cover as an entry condition.

Check onward travel requirements. Many countries expect evidence of a departure booking, and airlines enforce this at check in regardless of whether the border would.

Two weeks out

Check the visa you have been issued. Confirm the entry type, the validity window, and the permitted duration of stay. These are three separate things, and a visa valid for a year may permit stays of only 30 days.

Confirm any authorisation is linked to the passport you will actually carry. If you renewed a passport since applying, you almost certainly need to reapply.

Read the current travel advisory for your destination from your own government, and check the health guidance. Vaccine recommendations often need lead time.

Check entry rules for anything you are carrying. Prescription medication, certain foods, and drones all have country specific restrictions that have nothing to do with your visa.

The week before

Take copies. Photograph or scan the passport photo page, any visa or authorisation, your insurance certificate, and your bookings. Store them somewhere you can reach without your phone.

Print what needs printing. Some visa application centres and some border posts still want paper, and a printed confirmation costs nothing to carry.

Tell your bank you are travelling if your provider still requires it, and check that your cards will work at the destination.

At the airport

Carry your documents in hand luggage, never in the hold. Have the passport, any visa or authorisation reference, your onward booking, and your accommodation details reachable without unpacking.

Expect to be asked the purpose and length of your visit. Short, accurate answers backed by documents you can produce are the whole of it.

It does not tell you whether you will be admitted. Entry decisions rest with the border authority of the country you are entering, and no amount of preparation overrides that discretion.
