Barbados uses the Barbadian dollar (BBD), which has been pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate of 2 BBD to 1 USD since 1975. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants, and larger shops, while smaller vendors and market stalls typically prefer cash. US dollars are also accepted almost universally, making it easy to travel without exchanging currency.

Barbados is one of the Caribbean's more stable destinations and is rated at Level 1 (exercise normal precautions) by the US State Department. Petty theft, particularly on beaches and in crowded areas, is the most common risk for visitors, so keeping valuables secured is sensible. Gang-related crime exists in certain residential areas but rarely affects tourist zones.

Barbados has a network of government-operated blue-and-yellow Transport Board buses, yellow minibuses, and white-and-maroon ZR route vans that together cover most of the island at a flat fare of BDS $3.50 per journey. Taxis, identifiable by blue number plates beginning with Z, operate at government-regulated rates agreed before the journey begins. Car hire is also readily available for those who prefer to explore independently, with driving on the left.

The dry season from December to April brings the most reliably sunny weather with lower humidity, making it the peak travel period and consequently the most expensive time to visit. The shoulder months of May, June, and November offer warm temperatures, fewer crowds, and better value, with rain typically arriving as brief tropical showers rather than sustained downpours. The official hurricane season runs from June to November, though Barbados sits at the southern edge of the hurricane belt and direct hits are historically rare.

English is the official language and is spoken by everyone on the island, making communication straightforward for visitors from English-speaking countries. Most Bajans also speak Bajan Creole, a dialect with West African influences, in everyday conversation. Signage, menus, and service in tourist areas are all in standard English.

No vaccinations are required for entry to Barbados for most travellers, though hepatitis A vaccination is recommended for all unvaccinated visitors. There is a low-to-moderate risk of mosquito-borne illnesses including Zika, dengue, and chikungunya, so using insect repellent containing DEET and wearing long sleeves in the evenings is advisable. It is worth consulting a travel health clinic or GP several weeks before departure to confirm your routine vaccinations are up to date.
