Denmark uses the Danish krone (DKK), not the euro. Card payment is extremely widespread; Denmark is one of the most cashless societies in the world. MobilePay is the dominant Danish mobile payment system and is accepted by many street vendors and markets. Cash is rarely needed but useful as a backup.
Denmark is one of the world's safest countries with very low crime rates. Petty theft occurs in busy tourist areas and on public transport in Copenhagen, but violent crime targeting visitors is rare. Standard precautions with valuables are sufficient.
Copenhagen has an excellent metro, S-Tog suburban rail, and bus network. The country rail service (DSB) connects major towns on the main island of Zealand and via bridges to Jutland and Odense. Cycling is a primary mode of transport in Copenhagen and the flat Danish landscape makes it practical nationwide. Car hire is useful for exploring Jutland and more remote areas.
May to August brings long daylight hours, warm temperatures (16–25°C), and the most vibrant outdoor life in Copenhagen and across the country. June to August is peak season. September and October are quieter with pleasant temperatures. Christmas markets in December are atmospheric. Winter is cold and dark but hygge culture makes indoor experiences rewarding.
Danish is the official language. English proficiency in Denmark is among the highest in the world and virtually all Danes speak it fluently. Communication is rarely an issue for English-speaking visitors even in rural areas.
No vaccinations are required for standard travel to Denmark. Routine immunisations should be up to date. Tap water is excellent quality. Healthcare is of a very high standard. EU health card holders can access state healthcare; all other visitors should carry comprehensive travel insurance.
Tipping is not obligatory in Denmark, as service is considered included in prices, which are already high. Leaving a tip of 10% for particularly good service in restaurants is appreciated but never expected. Taxi drivers do not routinely expect tips.
Denmark has outstanding mobile coverage with strong 4G and extensive 5G networks. The main providers are TDC, Telenor, and Telia. EU roaming applies for European SIMs. Prepaid SIMs and eSIMs are readily available. Free Wi-Fi is available at many cafes, libraries, and public spaces.
