The local currency is the Falkland Islands pound, which is pegged one to one with the British pound, and British pounds circulate freely alongside it. Cards are accepted in Stanley's larger shops, hotels, and restaurants, but it is wise to carry cash for remote settlements, smaller outlets, and wildlife reserves where card facilities may be limited.

The Falkland Islands have very low crime and are considered a safe and welcoming destination for visitors. The main hazards are environmental, including strong winds, changeable weather, and uncleared minefields from 1982 that are clearly fenced and signposted, so always stay on marked paths and heed local warnings.

Stanley is easily explored on foot, while travel beyond the capital relies on four wheel drive vehicles, guided tours, and the Falkland Islands Government Air Service that links outlying settlements and islands by small aircraft. There is no public bus network, so most visitors arrange transport, hire a driver, or book excursions through their accommodation or a local operator.

The main visitor season runs from October to March during the southern hemisphere summer, when wildlife is most active and daylight hours are long. Penguins and seabirds nest through these months, seals and sea lions gather on the beaches, and the weather, though always changeable, is at its mildest for walking and boat trips.

English is the language of the Falkland Islands and is used everywhere, so communication is straightforward for English speaking visitors. Islanders are friendly and happy to share local knowledge, and you will quickly pick up a few camp expressions used to describe the countryside and farming life.

No special vaccinations are required for the Falkland Islands, though it is sensible to be up to date with routine immunisations before you travel. The King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in Stanley provides medical care, but facilities in remote areas are limited, so comprehensive travel insurance and any personal medication are strongly recommended.

Tipping is not an ingrained custom in the Falkland Islands and is never expected, as service is generally warm and unforced. If you feel a guide, driver, or host has gone out of their way, a modest tip will be appreciated, but it remains entirely at your discretion.
