Tonga uses the Tongan pa'anga (TOP). Cash is important for most daily transactions, especially outside Nuku'alofa. Cards are accepted at larger hotels and some restaurants, but ATMs are limited and not always reliable. Bring sufficient cash, particularly when island-hopping.
Tonga is generally a safe destination for visitors. Petty theft is uncommon but does occur. Cyclones are the main natural hazard, typically between November and April. Ocean safety is important: currents and surf can be strong in exposed areas. Exercise standard care when swimming, snorkelling, and diving.
Tongatapu, the main island, is served by taxis and rental vehicles. Domestic flights and inter-island ferries connect the main island groups, including Vava'u and Ha'apai. Ferries can be slow and schedules vary; domestic flights are more reliable. Island hopping is part of the Tongan experience.
May to October is the best time to visit, with drier weather and comfortable temperatures. This period also coincides with the humpback whale season (July to October), when whales migrate to Tongan waters to breed, offering one of the world's best whale swimming experiences. November to April is the cyclone season.
Tongan and English are both official languages. English is widely understood and used in business, tourism, and education. Most Tongans are bilingual. Visitors can get by easily in English across the islands.
No specific vaccinations are required to enter Tonga for most travellers. Routine immunisations should be up to date. Tap water quality varies by island; bottled water is recommended. Medical facilities are limited outside Nuku'alofa, so comprehensive travel insurance is strongly advised.
Tipping is not a traditional custom in Tonga and is not generally expected. The culture of gifting and reciprocity operates differently from the Western tipping model. For exceptional service at a resort or from a guide, a small tip will be appreciated but is never obligatory.
Mobile coverage is available on the main islands via Digicel and Tonga Communications Corporation (TCC). Coverage on smaller islands and atolls is limited. Local SIM cards are available in Nuku'alofa. Internet speeds tend to be slow. Wi-Fi is available at larger hotels and some cafes.
Tonga is a deeply Christian country, and Sundays are observed as a day of rest: most businesses close, and public activities are subdued. Dress modestly, particularly in villages and churches. The wearing of a ta'ovala (a woven mat worn around the waist) is traditional for formal occasions. Always greet people warmly and respectfully.
