Denham travel guide: Australia's westernmost town on Shark Bay
Denham is a small coastal town on the Peron Peninsula in Western Australia, and the westernmost town on the Australian mainland. It exists mainly because of what surrounds it. Shark Bay is a World Heritage area of seagrass meadows, dugongs, dolphins, and some of the oldest living structures on earth, and Denham is the place you stay while you see it.

What makes it special
Shark Bay is inscribed as World Heritage for meeting several natural criteria at once, and standing in Denham you are inside all of them.
The bay holds the largest and richest seagrass meadows known anywhere, which in turn support a substantial dugong population. Bottlenose dolphins come in to the shallows at Monkey Mia, north of town, in an interaction that has been running for decades and is now managed under strict conditions. At Hamelin Pool, at the southern end of the bay, hypersaline water supports living stromatolites, layered structures built by microbial mats that are the closest thing on the planet to the earliest known life.
Then there are the shell beaches. Where the water is too salty for most predators, one small cockle has proliferated to the point that the shore is made of its shells rather than sand, packed metres deep and blindingly white against turquoise water.
Denham itself is unpretentious, a working coastal town with a long jetty, a foreshore, and a road running out to the rest of the peninsula.
Getting there
Denham is remote, and the distances in Western Australia are real ones.
By road, the town is reached by turning off the North West Coastal Highway onto the Shark Bay Road. The drive from Perth is a long one, generally broken over two days, and the route north continues towards Carnarvon and eventually Exmouth and the Ningaloo Coast. There is also a small airport serving the Shark Bay area with connections to Perth.
Once you are there, a vehicle is close to essential. Monkey Mia, Hamelin Pool, and the beaches of Francois Peron National Park are spread along the peninsula, and some need a four-wheel drive on unsealed tracks. Check road conditions locally before setting out.
When to visit
The Shark Bay region is warm year-round and the seasons work in reverse of the northern hemisphere.
Australian winter and early spring, roughly June to October, is the most comfortable stretch for being outdoors. This is also when wildflowers appear across the region and when whale migration passes along the Western Australian coast.
Summer, December to February, is hot, and midday activity outside is genuinely limited by the heat.
Wildlife has its own calendar. Dugong numbers vary with water temperature, and the dolphin interaction at Monkey Mia runs year-round under park management.
What to see
Monkey Mia. North of Denham, and the reason many visitors come. Bottlenose dolphins approach the shallows in a long-running, closely supervised interaction. Access is managed by the park, so check the official park information for current arrangements.
Hamelin Pool. At the southern end of the bay, holding the living stromatolites. A boardwalk carries visitors over the water so the structures are not disturbed. It is a quiet, strange, genuinely ancient place.
Shell Beach. Kilometres of shore made of tiny white cockle shells rather than sand, a consequence of water too saline for the animals that would normally keep the population in check.
Francois Peron National Park. North of Denham on the tip of the peninsula, with red cliffs meeting white beach and turquoise water. Much of it requires a four-wheel drive.
Eagle Bluff. A clifftop boardwalk south of town looking down into clear shallow water, where rays, sharks, and turtles are often visible from above.
