Singapore uses the Singapore Dollar (SGD). Credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere, from hawker centres to luxury hotels. ATMs are widely available across the island, and contactless and QR-code payments via apps such as PayNow are common.
Singapore consistently ranks among the safest cities in the world. Crime rates are very low, and strict laws are enforced against drug use, vandalism, and littering. Travellers should still exercise standard precautions with their belongings in crowded areas. In an emergency, call police on 999 or the fire and ambulance service on 995.
Singapore has an excellent public transport network. The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) rail system covers most of the island and is clean, air-conditioned, and affordable. Buses connect areas not served by MRT, and taxis and ride-hailing apps such as Grab are readily available. Singapore drives on the left.
Singapore is a year-round destination due to its equatorial climate, but February to April is generally considered the best period to visit. These months fall within the drier season, with lighter rainfall, lower humidity, and more reliably sunny skies.
Singapore has four official languages: English, Malay, Mandarin Chinese, and Tamil. English is the primary language of government, business, and education, so travellers will find it straightforward to communicate throughout the country.
No vaccinations are mandatory to enter Singapore, but travellers should be up to date with routine vaccines recommended in their home country. The CDC recommends considering hepatitis A, typhoid, and hepatitis B for most travellers. Consult a travel health clinic or your doctor at least four to six weeks before departure.
Tipping is not customary in Singapore and is not expected. Many restaurants include a 10% service charge in the bill, and some establishments, including the airport, do not permit staff to accept tips. Rounding up a taxi fare as a small gesture of appreciation is acceptable but never obligatory.
Prepaid SIM cards are available at Changi Airport upon arrival and from telecom providers including Singtel, StarHub, and M1 in shopping malls across the city. You will need your passport to register a SIM. eSIMs are also widely supported. Singapore has extensive 4G and 5G coverage.
